1. WHAT IS BLUE LIGHT?

Blue Light is a part of the light visible to our eyes: visible light ranges from 380nm to 780nm in wavelength. Blue light corresponds to the range between 380 and 500 nanometers.
Blue light can be divided into two parts:

  • Blue-violet light (between 380nm and 455nm)
  • Blue-turquoise light (between 455 and 495nm), essential for regulating our sleep cycle. It even has the effect of improving our well-being and our good mood.

2. WHY PROTECT YOURSELF FROM BLUE LIGHT?

The energy of a photon is inversely proportional to its wavelength. Okay, but what does that mean?
This means that the lower the wavelength of light, the more energetic it is, and therefore potentially dangerous.
Blue light accelerates retinal aging and contributes to the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), among other factors such as age or genetic and environmental factors.

Exposure to blue light can also cause sleep disturbances, migraines, or visual fatigue at the end of the day.

The sun and all artificial lamps and lighting are sources of blue light. The whiter (cooler) a light is, the more it will be a source of blue light. Conversely, yellower/orange (warmer) lights emit less blue light.
Screens, for example, are white lights, which is why it is necessary to protect yourself from them.

3. HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM BLUE LIGHT?

The simplest solution is to limit exposure to blue light, for example by reducing screen time.

On average, French people spend 6 hours a day in front of one or more screens (TV, computer, smartphone).

For the rest of the time, it is possible to protect yourself from blue light by wearing glasses equipped with blue light filtering lenses. The best is to choose lenses that filter blue-violet light and let blue-turquoise light pass through. By filtering only a part of the blue light (20 to 30%), this allows for 3 things:

  • Not altering color vision
  • Maintaining the beneficial effects of blue-turquoise light
  • Also filtering UV rays

Our non-prescription or prescription blue light filtering lenses filter precisely 30% of blue light.
This is the perfect compromise between effective protection and wearing comfort without altering color perception.
