Guide to choosing the right frame

Complete this quiz to find your ideal pair of glasses.

HOW TO CHOOSE WELL
HIS PAIR OF GLASSES?

Do you need to protect your eyes from the blue light of screens, but don't know how to choose your pair of glasses? You aware that screens tire your eyes and want to wear glasses, but you’re not ready to sacrifice your look?

In this guide, Le Petit Lunetier explains how to choose your frame so that, even behind checks, you always have more style than your neighbor!

After all, don’t they say that the eyes are the mirrors of the soul? It would be a shame not to give them the prettiest setting possible…!

1/ MATCH YOUR GLASSES TO THE SHAPE OF YOUR FACE

This is the best way to choose the ideal pair of glasses! To find out what shape your face is, study it in front of a mirror. If this method doesn't work for you, take a selfie and, in an editing app, trace the outline of your face (without the ears). The shape will then appear more clearly to you.

  • You have a round face

You have a round face if it has curved lines, without any angle, and if it is as wide as it is long.

WHICH GLASSES TO CHOOSE?

Round faces will opt for a thin frame with pronounced angles. These models of glasses will break the roundness of their features by lengthening and refining their face. Their eyes will appear larger. If you want to emphasize your features, choose a frame with a rounder shape.

  • You have an oval face

You have an oval face when it is longer than it is wide.

WHICH FRAMES WILL EMPOWER YOU?

All frames will enhance an oval face! The only limits will therefore be those imposed on you by your style and personality. FYI, round frames will tend to make you look younger, while rectangular glasses will give a more dynamic and assertive look to oval faces.

  • You have a triangular face

The face “points upwards”. Your forehead is narrower than the bottom of your face. Your cheeks and your chin are more marked.

Your face “points down.” Your forehead is wider than the bottom of your face (inverted triangle). You have long eyebrows.

HOW TO MAGNIFY THIS TRIANGULAR FACE?

The goal is to give the illusion of a wider forehead and draw the eye to the upper part of your face. To do this, choose brightly colored or patterned eyeglass frames.

HOW TO MAGNIFY THIS TRIANGULAR FACE?

Here, you should try to “reduce” the top of your face. Try using frames with lower edges wider than the upper edges. Avoid flashy colors. You can even try pierced frames! We definitely forget the butterfly shape, the thick frames and the extravagant geometric shapes. To avoid reinforcing the “point” aspect of your face, leave frames that go below your cheekbones to others. On the other hand, we like to focus on frames with round shapes. In both cases, Le Petit Lunetier recommends very light frames.

  • You have a rectangular or elongated face

You have a square face when your jawline is strong and your forehead is broad. The top and bottom of your face are as long as they are wide.

WHICH FRAME FOR THIS FACE SHAPE?

The idea is to make your face appear less long and “rebalance the proportions.” To help you, Le Petit Lunetier suggests pairs of glasses with discolored or contrasting frames, and sufficiently “stretched” on the sides to widen your face. Frames with a low bridge will shorten somewhat long noses. Another solution to give width to your pretty face: opt for oversized round or oval glasses, in the “cat’s eye” or “butterfly” style.

  • You have a square face

You have a square face when your jaw line is strong and your forehead is broad. The top and bottom of your face are as long as they are wide.

WHICH FRAME TO CHOOSE?

To give more “pep” to the shape of your face and bring out your personality, opt for bold geometric shapes! We will avoid square glasses, precisely to “break up” the morphology of the face. If you prefer to soften your features, favor oval shapes and soft lines. To take care of your style, try thin frames and/or frames with rounded shapes. And to harmonize everything, make sure that your pair of glasses is narrower than your face.

  • You have a diamond or diamond face

You have a diamond or diamond face when the – imaginary – vertical line that connects your eye to your jaw resembles the side of a diamond. Your cheekbones are wide.

WHICH GLASSES PURCHASE?

Go for frames with a geometric or oval shape. They will give the impression of reducing the distance between your temples. Don't be impressed by frames that are wider than your cheekbones: they will suit you perfectly! As with rectangular faces, let yourself be seduced by “cat’s eye” or fluttering shapes.

2/ WHICH FRAME COLOR TO CHOOSE?

The problem with traditional opticians is that the colors they offer for an eyeglass frame are often standard. Unfortunately, these colors will not necessarily highlight blue eyes like brown eyes or green eyes. To choose your fashion accessory, the best practice is to identify the range of colors that will highlight you the most. This will depend on your eyes obviously, but also on your skin and your hair.

To identify the perfect colors for you, here are some tips:

  • They soften your face and give it a touch of light.
  • They blur your wrinkles and any dark circles.
  • They make you look good.

3/ DON’T FORGET THE OTHER ASSETS OF YOUR FACE.

  • The size of your head

Do you have a small head? Set your sights on small eyeglass frames, ensuring that the width of your glasses is no larger than the widest part of your head.

Do you have a large head? So opt for frames that are too.

  • Your eyebrows

To ensure that your eyebrows and your pair of glasses match, make sure that the upper part of your frame reaches just below your eyebrows. They contribute to the expression of your face, so they must be visible! Furthermore, if your eyebrows found themselves “stuck” in the frame of your glasses, you risk losing all the class that characterizes you!

If you choose a frame with a curved top line, make sure it follows the line of your eyebrows. The secret is to harmonize the shape of your eyebrows as much as possible with that of your glasses. Concretely, this means that if your eyebrows are straight, round lenses probably won't make you stand out...

  • The separation of your eyes

For people whose eyes are wide apart, Le Petit Lunetier recommends wearing a frame with a dark bridge. This will make your eyes appear closer together. If, on the other hand, your eyes are already rather close together, opt for a light-colored and/or thin bridge.

  • Your nose

Bridges with a very large contact surface with the skin give the illusion of shortening the nose. Short noses will favor high bridges and lighter colors.

4/ WHICH FRAME COLOR TO CHOOSE?

Before letting you make your choice, here are our final tips:

  • The ideal model is the one that follows the line of your eyebrows, provided that the glasses do not touch your cheekbones when you smile, and that your eyelashes do not touch your glasses.
  • Whatever the shape of your face, the shape of your glasses should enhance its oval.
  • Your frame should fit between the outer corner of your eyes and the end of your temple. If it protrudes, the frame is too wide for your face.
  • Treat yourself! If you choose a pair that follows these recommendations but that you don't feel comfortable with, you won't wear them for long. Let your personality shine!

Your lifestyle can also influence your choice. Athletes will gravitate more towards lightweight models, while terrace aficionados or screen addicts will be able to afford more freedom.

Note that all of these tips also apply to choosing your sunglasses and your prescription glasses. However, if your correction requires thick lenses, know that you will probably have fewer choices. Not all frames can support all lens thicknesses. To give you an example, progressive lenses require a “high” frame.
